By leveraging www.nba.com and an API Client, we amassed a substantial dataset spanning over 23 years, comprising more than 50,000 rows of game-specific data. This comprehensive collection includes 65 distinct metrics ranging from two-point and three-point shots to free throws made and attempted, alongside various aggregate metrics that gauge overall performance.

A significant portion of our analysis focused on aggregate statistics with particular emphasis on PIE (Player Impact Estimate), which encapsulates a team's overall influence on the game's events. While PIE is a critical metric for evaluating team performance, it is complemented by other important measures such as FG% (Field Goal Percentage) and TS% (True Shooting Percentage), both pivotal in assessing a team's shooting efficiency and effectiveness.

Choosing the right metrics was a challenge, so we turned to Pandas' correlation method to identify which of the more than 60 metrics were most relevant. Our analysis revealed that Player Impact Estimate (PIE) had the strongest correlation with team victories, closely followed by Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%), True Shooting Percentage (TS%), and both Offensive and Defensive Ratings. These key indicators formed the backbone of our study, providing a clear picture of each team's performance for any given game, thereby enabling us to start evaluating home court advantage.

NBA analysts and fans often believe that the home court advantage stems from fan attendance and players' familiarity with their own court. To assess how these factors influence home court performance, we analyzed average stadium attendance over a span of 23 years to examine the impact of fans on this advantage. The data was sourced from ESPN, utilizing the requests package to compile a dataframe detailing each team's average attendance figures.

Our initial design phase incorporated steps from mapping, drawing inspiration from Harvard's Visualization Design Sprint and the Five Design-Sheet Method by Think Up Themes Ltd., as modeled by Kieran Tan Kah Wang. By building on these frameworks, we aimed to broaden our ideas and explore a variety of possibilities. Although we didn't adhere strictly to these methods, they served as guiding principles for organizing our ideation, sketching, prototyping, and testing stages. This approach enabled us to create an environment where creativity thrives and innovative solutions can emerge.

NBA Home Court Advantage: Decline and Contributing Factors

In examining the dynamics of home court advantage in the NBA, a comprehensive dataset was utilized, encompassing time series data on win percentages from 1974 to 2022. This dataset also included team-specific yearly statistics such as attendance figures, effective field goal percentage (eFG%), field goal percentage (FG%), and Player Impact Estimate (PIE) over the same period.

Exploratory analysis of this extensive data revealed that while home court advantage has been a consistent phenomenon in the NBA, there has been a noticeable decline in recent years. Visualizations indicated that teams with higher eFG% and greater attendance tend to enjoy a more pronounced home court advantage.

The observed decline in home court advantage could potentially be linked to several modern developments. Improved travel accommodations and advanced training facilities have likely mitigated some of the challenges traditionally faced by visiting teams. Moreover, the integration of sophisticated analytics into basketball strategies may have leveled the playing field to some extent. Additionally, higher attendance at games often translates to louder and more engaged crowds, providing an extra boost for home teams through increased morale and pressure on opponents.

By employing a scatter plot, we were able to clearly illustrate the connection between the magnitude of a team's loss or win and their overall performance. To further refine our visualization, we used color coding to differentiate between home and away games, revealing distinct patterns. Scatter plots serve as powerful tools for identifying underlying trends when enhanced with color encodings. Our research on this topic suggests that "Scatter plots are one of the few chart types where coloring by underlying values without encoding them by position, length, etc., can work surprisingly well." In this instance, using color encoding effectively highlighted these hidden values.
Interactivity played a crucial role in this project, serving as an excellent medium for storytelling through visualizations. By incorporating dropdown menus and brush selection tools, we introduced a layer of detail that could effectively illustrate the nuances of home court advantage. While not all graphs performed as expected, the interactive elements significantly enhanced the narrative.
